Some of Britain's finest literary talent will be popping over to Greenwich in May for the borough's inaugural book festival.

Victoria Hislop - author of The Island - plus The Psycopath Test's Jon Ronson and University of Greenwich writer-in-residence Paul Ewen are amongst a host of writers to speak at the Greenwich Book Festival which runs from May 22 to May 24.

Organised by the University of Greenwich with support from Greenwich Council and Old Royal Naval College, the festival will also feature family events, creative writing workshops, a dedicated festival shop and food stalls.

And Greenwich primary school children will also be getting involved, having the chance to meet Gruffalo illustrator Axel Scheffler and Sophy Henn, author of Where, Bear?

University Head of Department of Literature, Language and Theatre Dr Zoë Pettit said: "We are really excited to be hosting the first ever book festival here at the university in the heart of Greenwich.

"There is a fantastic line-up of authors and events for all ages. We will also showcase the work of our Creative Writing students, led by Dr Alex Pheby, author and Programme Leader for Creative Writing.”

A full children’s programme running through the weekend includes activity workshops, book-themed performances and events with authors including Kate Saunders and Pip Jones who will lead a workshop on imaginary pets.

Throughout the festival, University of Greenwich authors Alex Pheby, Emily Critchley and Cherry Smyth will be showcasing the creative work of the university’s staff and students, and offering writing workshops for all ages.

Greenwich Council's cabinet member for culture Councillor Miranda Williams approved £12,000 funding for the event this month - part of a £425,000 package which will also see the return of Greenwich and Docklands International Festival, the Greenwich Dance Festival and a winter programme including the Woolwich Winter Warmer and Eltham Lights Up.
