Eltham Palace, Court Yard, London SE9
Medieval royal heritage and 1930s glamour can both be enjoyed at Eltham Palace.
Eltham was popular with monarchs for several hundred years because of its convenient location. A moated palace was built which became a favourite home of Plantagenet monarchs during the 14th and 15th centuries.
The palace today comprises the Great Hall, built around 1480 by Edward IV, and the unusual Courtauld House attached to it.
Stephen and Virginia Courtauld built the fabulous Art Deco Courtauld House mansion in the 1930s. It has been restored to its original style by English Heritage.
The grounds of Eltham Palace contain a rich variety of medieval and modern design features and are well worth exploring.
