PUB REVIEW: The Coach House, Watling Street, Bexleyheath

HANDS up if you like to watch girl bands singing and asking “Don’t cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me?”

If you do then you might want to go along to The Coach House in Bexleyheath this month because a Pussycat Dolls (PCD) tribute band is playing.

Being an old soak I had never actually heard of PCD until researching the group to write this (and have since been informed they may well have split).

I say ‘might want to go along’ because if you like PCD – and if they do not split – then I think you would be better off seeing them at The O2 rather than watching anyone try and cover them at this pub.

The place was largely empty with only about six people chowing down on the meat and several veg carvery at the reasonable price of £7.50 for two courses.

This made me slightly wary of approaching the hot plates so ordered a steak and onion baguette (£3.95) with cheesy chips (£1.75).

When it came (after waiting for what seemed like an eternity) the steak was medium rare as requested.

But it was also just lukewarm and tasted like it had either not been reheated properly or cooked recently but not cooked enough.

Sometimes this is understandable in a busy restaurant but seemingly the only other thing the chef had to do was cook some tempura prawns for a carvery customer.

I will forgive any food errors if there is a bountiful range of real ales to sup.

But at the Coach House where there should have been bounty there were two pumps turned round leaving lager as my main choice on tap.

There were no faults with the Fosters (£3), Stella Artois (£3.20) and Carling (£3) but they were not what I wanted.

I certainly don’t think the real Pussycat Dolls would give it the time of day, that’s for sure.
