Fans of hand-made jams, vintage fashions and home-grown veg are in for a retro treat when, for the second year running, the Lewisham Country Fayre gives the borough a rural makeover. What could be a more perfect setting for the fayre's horticultural, craft and cookery competitions, children's farm, seed swap shop and vintage fair than the town centre green space of Cornmill Gardens?
Everyone is invited to take part in contests to find the best knitted item, best photograph of rural Lewisham, funniest shaped vegetables and the yummiest jam and cakes.
Keeping with the theme, there'll be kitch entertainment from cockney duo Chas n' Dave and Hoop Lala, of Britain's Got Talent fame.
Deborah Efemeni. Lewisham's town centre manager, said: "The growth in retro and nostalgic pursuits has been evolving for some time. Knitting circles, vintage clothing and home style, afternoon teas and farmers markets seem to be a call for comfort and familiarity in the face of credit crunch panics, constantly evolving communities and uncertain times.
"Lewisham's tackling it with a large dose of nostalgia and a bit of light-hearted fun. Our fayre celebrates community spirit and a golden reminiscence for 'the way things used to be' things like growing your own veg, fruits, making jams, baking cakes, discovering how to make and mend. Not to mention Chas n' Dave and the top ten finalist's of Lewisham's Got Talent for a good old London's knees up to cheer everyone up."
Lewisham Country Fayre, Sep 14. 12 noon until 6pm. Cornmill Gardens. Free.
