Actor Michael Gambon has engineered a career for himself as one of the leading lights in British theatre after starting out on a very different career path in Crayford.

Born in Dublin in 1940, Gambon moved to London as a young child. He left school at 15 to follow his father into engineering and became an apprentice toolmaker at Vickers in Crayford.

Gambon got into theatre at the age of 19, starting out in amateur acting before joining the National Theatre.

He has regularly appeared at the National and Royal Shakespeare Company. His best-known roles are Brecht's Galileo at the National in 1980, The Singing Detective on TV in 1986 and, more recently, Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies.
