ENVIRONMENT: Greenwich Council leader crowned News Shopper green winner

THE leader of Greenwich Council has been crowned the winner of News Shopper's How Green Is Your Council Leader competition.

Councillor Chris Roberts picked up his trophy from judge Elizabeth Greenwood at Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park today.

Each council leader in the News Shopper area was asked 10 questions testing their environmental credentials, and Cllr Roberts, who has never had a driving lesson in his life, came out on top.

Ms Greenwood said: "He sets a good personal example - identifying many ways in which he reduces his carbon footprint including managing his lifestyle without owning a car.

"He lobbies to improve the quality of life for Greenwich residents by better provision of public transport, to make civic spaces more pleasant for people by extending pedestrian areas and also to expand local green spaces."

Cllr Roberts said: "It is a big surprise. I have never really considered how not driving a car can appear to other people. It's nice to be appreciated."
