LONDON: Hunt for the perfect British garden begins

ENGLISH roses, Welsh daffodils or Scottish thistles could all feature in the London 2012 Olympic Park as part of the Great British Garden competition.

Olympic Minister Tessa Jowell is urging amateur gardeners from across London to come up with ideas to transform a quarter acre patch into a traditional British garden.

The winning design will then feature in east London during the Olympic and Paralympic games in 2012.

Director General of the Royal Horticultural Society Inga Grimsey (corr) said: “Gardening has been part of our social and cultural make-up for generations.

"We know there is no easy answer as to what constitutes a British garden but this challenge makes this competition even more exciting.”

Six finalists will be shortlisted by a panel of experts before being put to a public vote in September.

Minister for the Olympics Tessa Jowell said: "We are known all over the world for being a country of gardeners.

"The Olympic Park Great British Garden Competition is the perfect opportunity for all those amateur gardeners up and down the country to design and display a garden that can be enjoyed by thousands of people from all over the world."

More details and application forms are available on the Royal Horticultural Society's website.
