PLANS have been announced to cut emissions from publicly owned buildings.

London Mayor Ken Livingstone has announced plans to cut energy use by 25 per cent in buildings owned by the Greater London Authority (GLA).

The Mayor plans to refit GLA buildings, including offices and police and fire stations, with improved insulation and more energy efficient technology.

Mr Livingstone said: "This marks the start of the transformation of London's buildings from the major source of carbon emissions in the city to a beacon of modern, low-carbon efficiency."

Environmental campaign group Greenpeace welcomed the news.

Its chief scientist, Dr Doug Parr, said: "London is setting the pace. If we're going to beat climate change, we need to see this level of ambition across the world."
