A LABOUR politician is calling for an end to chemicals used in supermarket refrigerators which damage the environment.
The Parliamentary bill launched by Eltham MP Clive Efford would ban large supermarkets from using hydroflurocarbons.
The chemicals give off damaging emissions which can contribute to global warming.
According to Mr Efford the phasing out of its use in supermarkets by 2015 has the potential to save the equivalent of 175m tonnes of carbon dioxide between now and 2050.
Mr Efford said: “With supermarkets still making hundreds of millions of pounds in profit each year, and in Tesco’s case over £3bn, the sector is well able to absorb the costs of replacing hydroflurocarbons with more environmentally friendly products.”
