CATFORD: Pupils rummage through rubbish to help recycling

YOUNGSTERS have been rummaging through their school’s rubbish to help improve its recycling rate.

Around 50 Year 7 pupils from Sedgehill School, Sedgehill Road, Catford, have joined together to tackle recycling in the school.

Weighing the rubbish, pupils realised the schools produced around one tonne a week.

And they have drawn up a plan to drastically reduce the amount of waste the school produces over the next six months.

Through taking part in the project, the school and all students completing the programme will receive a United Nations Environment Programme Certificate.

The certificate is achieved once measurable changes have been made in the school.

Head of Year 7 Alex Mees said: “The kids are really getting into it. On the day they went through the rubbish they were really diving in.

“It’s good to see them getting passionate about something that’s so important.”
