SYDENHAM: Cash award for green computer scheme

3:40pm Tuesday 30th June 2009

A SCHEME which recycles unwanted computers for community use has been given a cash boost.

Eco Computer Systems, based in Sydenham Road, Sydenham, trains previously unemployed young people to repair disused computers.

The fixed machines are then donated to schools and other community projects.

On June 25, Darren Taylor, who set up the organisation, was given £800 as part of the It’s Your Community scheme, a programme set up to provide cash to community projects.

Mr Taylor, who has worked in the IT industry for 20 years, says he set it up after becoming “appalled” at British society’s thowaway culture.

He said: “We’ve repaired over 500 computers and sent them back into the community.

“But just as importantly we are giving training and work to people who haven’t had either for a long time.”

Under the award scheme, run by O2, £100 to £1,000 is available for ideas benefiting the community or building community spirit.
