Young cyclists put to the test

4:38pm Monday 4th August 2008

YOUNGSTERS battled it out to become the borough's cyclist of the year after taking cycling proficiency courses.

The 94 competitors aged 11 to 15 took part in Cyclist of the Year 2008 at Norman Park, off Bromley Common, Bromley.

The cyclists were tested on different skills, including turning left, turning right, cycle maintenance, cycle control and the Highway Code.

Hannah Morland, 11, from Orpington, was the winner, and her prizes included a new bike, £75 cash, a trophy and a cycling goodie bag.

Head of Bromley Council's road safety unit John Walton said: "It's a more environmentally-friendly form of transport than the car and our training programme equips secondary school age kids to ride their bike to and from school. This could impact on congestion levels around our schools"
