Honor Oak Park Action Group nominated for Green Guardian Awards

2:38pm Tuesday 2nd December 2008

A COMMUNITY group’s campaign to keep the streets tidy has led to it being named as a finalist in the Green Guardian Awards. The Honor Oak Park Action Group has been nominated as best green group for Lewisham for its campaign to clean up rubbish in the Honor Oak Park area and its efforts to prevent fly-tipping. The group kick started its campaign by working with Southern Rail which helped clear rubbish from in front of Honor Oak Park train station, as well as giving the group £250 to plant a small garden behind the railings at the station’s entrance. Fly-tipping in the area was another problem idenitfied by the group which they say was made worse by commercial waste bins not being kept appropriately. The group designed its own posters which have been displayed in the area to deter fly-tippers and contacted Lewisham Council which agreed to review waste collection services in Honor Oak Park. The group now has a website to inform, raise awareness and engage the community in improving the environment. For more information, visit honoroak.blogspot.com The awards take place at Indigo2, Greenwich, on February 5. Watch this page for more details of our exciting guest speaker, the incredible venue and more information on the event itself. A limited number of tickets are still available.
