ENVIRONMENTAL leaders from America have been finding out about the borough's green initiatives.

Officials from the US Government were given a green tour by Greenwich Council to learn about conserving energy in residential areas.

Government leaders included deputy chief of staff to the Mayor of Pittsburgh Kristen Baginski and the director of energy for the city of Boston, Brad Swing.

Directors from large American energy companies also attended.

Sites visited included Raven's Way residential block in Lee, where the visitors were shown a mini Combined Heat and Power system.

This device uses heat created as a by-product of electricity which is normally wasted by other heating systems.

The group also stopped at Hider Court residential facilities, which use solar power to cut carbon emissions and the cost of communal lighting.

Councillor Rajwant Sidhu, cabinet member for the Greener Greenwich initiative, said: "We are honoured the delegation chose Greenwich as an example of eco-friendly practice.

"Conserving the environment is a priority for the council and is why we are continuing to implement new strategies."
