A PRIMARY school has opened a new wildlife area in memory of a former teacher.

The Willow Walk, at Hurst Primary School in Dorchester Avenue, Bexley, was created in memory of Phyllis Adkins.

She taught the junior classes at the school for 40 years and eventually retired in 1984.

Mrs Adkins died in 2007 and friends, pupils and colleagues donated cash in her memory, to create the Willow Walk and buy a bench carrying a memorial plaque in her name.

The walk was officially opened by Kathleen Everett, Mrs Adkins' sister.

The Willow Walk was created by teacher Liz Chapman with help from her husband and a team of volunteers from Accenture in Bexleyheath, because of Mrs Adkins lifelong love of nature.
