Volunteers clear up river rubbish

VOLUNTEERS have helped keep their park green by cleaning up a river.

On April 27 around 10 people waded into the River Ravensbourne in Ladywell Fields to remove the rubbish which had accumulated.

Volunteers cleared away small items such as crisp packets and cans, along with a supermarket trolley which had been dumped in the water.

It was organised by environmental charity Thames21 and the Ladywell Fields User Group.

The rubbish was then taken away by park maintenance company Glendale Grounds Management.

Thames21 river programmes manager Chris Coode said: "The reason we exist is because there is no statutory duty on anyone to clear waterways.

"When we started working here five years ago it was a lot worse.

"There has been a real improvement."

The group is planning to return to the river in the summer.

On similar lines I am looking for volunteers to help with rivers. Please contact me if you can help throw some rubbish into the river so these people have something to do on the weekend. We will probably be working at night so the rozzers dont get us, bring any old crap you can , it doesnt matter if its poisonous cos they like getting that stuff out, and I cant stick swans anyway. Look forward to hearing from you. ( JOKING!!!)
