MPs discuss new climate change bill
A PUBLIC meeting was held last week, as MPs prepare for a parliamentary debate and vote on a new climate change bill.
The Big Climate Change Debate, organised by pressure group Friends of the Earth, was held on April 22 at Friends House, in Euston Road, central London.
Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, was joined by Conservative and Liberal Democrat counterparts Peter Ainsworth and Steve Webb to debate the new law.
The Climate Change Bill contains provisions which will set a legally binding target for reducing UK carbon dioxide emission by at least 26 per cent by 2020 and at least 60 per cent by 2050, compared with 1990 levels.
It is due to be debated in Parliament within the next few weeks and will be voted on in late June or early July.
