SEVERAL of the region's students are celebrating after being named among the country's highest achievers.

Sydenham School student Kirsty Gibbs, 17, was among the top 10 GCSE art and design students according to Edexcel, the UK's largest awarding body.

Kirsty sat the GCSE art and design exam earlier this summer and the results issued this month show Kirsty achieved one of the highest overall marks out of 9,763 candidates.

Headteacher Barbara Williams said: "We are absolutely delighted with Kirsty's achievement.

"Her fantastic grade in fine art was very well deserved and she will be continuing her studies at Sydenham. She has a very bright future ahead of her."

Another Sydenham student, Jing Zhu, 15, was among the top 10 students in GCSE Chinese, which included assessment of writing, listening and reading.

The results show out of 2,250 candidates, Jing achieved one of the highest marks.

Barbara Williams added: "We have many students at Sydenham who take exams in their home languages and we are immensely proud of all of them. Jing's achievement is exceptional."

Hayes School student David Sterling, 17, sat the GCE AS geography exam earlier this summer at Hayes School in Bromley and out of 12,704 candidates, David was one of the highest achievers.

Headteacher Kieran Osborne said: "To achieve an A grade is very impressive, to be one of the top 10 students in the country is outstanding.

"David and his teachers deserve to be very proud."

Jerry Jarvis, Edexcel's managing director said: "This is a tremendous achievement and testament to the hard work students put into preparing for their exams.

"We send our congratulations to them."
