HABERDASHERS' Aske's Federation is celebrating after a successful few weeks, which have included a royal visit and an outstanding Ofsted result.

The Federation, made up of Hatcham College, New Cross, and Knights Academy, Grove Park, was inspected by Ofsted at the end of May and was praised for its high standards.

Carmen Rodney, reporting inspector for Ofsted, said: "Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College provides its students with an outstanding education. Students are proud of their school, and recognise the benefits of being a part of the Askean brand. They have been highly effective in spreading the benefits of their expertise by helping failing schools to achieve well."

Knights Academy, previously considered a failing school, has dramatically improved GCSE results, with only 9 per cent of students achieving five A to C grades in August 2004, to 42 per cent in 2007, the second year of being part of Haberdashers' Aske's Federation.

Federation chief executive, Dr Sidwell, said: "Federations are the way forward for raising standards. There are links at every level across the two academies, where resources and best practice are always shared.

"Each Academy values the same strong ethos based on mutual respect, responsible behaviour and a strict uniform policy."

Just days after a visit from Government Ministers Rt Hon Ed Balls MP, Jim Knight MP and Lord Andrew Adonis, Knights Academy was also given royal approval, when Prince Edward officially opened the school.

The Queen's youngest son visited a Year 7 textile lesson, where pupils were making shorts, and sampled some delights from a Year 9 food technology class. He made every effort to talk to all the children he met and was presented with a colourful bouquet of flowers for his wife by Year 7 student Hannah Duff.
