New home for excluded pupil centre
A unit which deals with pupils excluded from Bexley schools is to get a new home and a new name.
The Pupil Referral Unit for secondary school age students is currently based at the Howbury Centre in Slade Green Road, Slade Green.
But the centre and surrounding land is due to be sold for redevelopment, as part of Bexley Council's plans to build a new civic centre in Bexleyheath.
The council's cabinet has agreed to move the unit to the former Abbey Primary School site in Lensbury Way, Thamesmead, which is already home to a similar unit for primary school children.
Bexley has set aside £3m for the new unit, which also provides "time out" for youngsters who may be in danger of exclusion.
It has also been suggested the unit needs a new name, and its students are to be invited to come up with ideas, after cabinet members heard they do not like the name.
Council leader Councillor Ian Clement said: "We need to find a service and an environment which treats the children with respect and finds a way forward for them."
