Assistants are top of the class
Sarah Smith from Groundwork presents teaching assistant Chloe Lewis with her certificate
Sarah Smith from Groundwork presents teaching assistant Chloe Lewis with her certificate

IT WAS graduation time for a dozen people who have just qualified as teaching assistants.

This was as part of a second six-month course run jointly by charity Trust Thamesmead and environmental charity Groundwork.

Some of the students were encouraged onto the course by the trust's employment and training department when they went for advice on training and jobs.

Others were part of Groundwork's efforts to help the jobless in deprived areas.

Many of the students had to combine the course, which included work placements at three primary schools, with looking after their own families.

All of them successfully completed the course and were awarded certificates at a graduation ceremony held in the Jubilee Community Centre, off Titmuss Avenue, Thamesmead.

The event was also attended by the students' families and friends.

All of them are now qualified to work in primary schools as a teaching assistant.

They also received extra training in child protection, health and safety and first aid.
