IT IS a novel way to learn about food and cooking, but it has proved a great success at a Bexley secondary school.
A professional chef from the company which provides school meals at Blackfen School for Girls worked with a group of pupils and their families to improve their cooking skills and teach them new ones.
Chef Darren Tinkler, from Scolarest, has been working with six families, including mums, dads, brothers, sisters and cousins.
He has been taking them through different themes such as fish, breads, poultry and desserts each week.
Each family cooks a different recipe and finishes with a tasting session.
For the final session of the six-week course, the families cooked a celebratory meal with a menu drawn from the dishes they had already made.
This was served to invited guests including family members, school staff and governors.
The cooking course was free and is part of the school's efforts to promote healthy eating.
It was the second course run this year.
At the end, each family received a certificate and a copy of all the recipes.
The costs were met by the school in Blackfen Road, Blackfen, and the Bexley Extended School Service.
