MEMBERS of Bexley's Children's Parliament have been discussing the environment at the annual Article 12 conference.

Around 150 school children attended the event at the Civic Offices, Bexleyheath.

Article 12 is part of the United Nations Convention which says children have the right to participate in decision-making which is relevant in their lives and to influence decisions taken within the family, the school or the community.

Bexley holds two Article 12 conferences a year for children aged five to 13 and another for teens aged 13 to 19.

The youngsters choose the theme and organise the event from start to finish.

Bexley Children's Parliament meets fortnightly and is made up of children aged five to 13 who attend a Bexley school or live in the borough.

Cabinet member for children's services, Councillor Katie Perrior, said: "We are very fortunate to have such an active Children's Parliament in the borough."

She added: "Because the children plan and chair this event it is always fresh, lively and full of fun ideas while keeping a focus on the important subjects it covers."
