A BEXLEY school has been named one of the capital’s most improved schools for last summer’s GCSE results.
London schools saw the biggest improvements in pass rates and grades in the country in 2009, achieving above the national average results for the fifth year running.
And among London's high achievers Trinity School, a non-selective Church of England school in Erith Road, Belvedere, has been named the second most improved school in the capital.
Its percentage of students gaining five A* to C grades including English and maths jumped 22 per cent last summer, from 32 per cent in 2008, to 54 per cent last year.
Around a quarter of the passes were at A* or A grades, smashing all the school’s previous records.
Headteacher Ian Collins said:“The examination results at GCSE were the best in the history of the school and it is fantastic to be named as the second most improved school in London.
“These results represent a magnificent joint effort by pupils and staff as well as planned intervention by consultants from Education London.”
He added: “Trinity has encouraged and enabled every one of our young people to be successful in all aspects of their learning.
“We are delighted by their achievements and I would like to pay tribute to the hard work of students, to the teachers who went the extra mile, and to parents who worked in close partnership with the school.
“Just as important as the headline statistic is the fact that 99 per cent of students, that is all but two, gained five GCSEs including English and maths.”
At the same time, Bexleyheath School in Woolwich Road, Bexleyheath, has just been named as a National Challenge Trust school, to help it improve its GCSE results.
The school achieved a 35.4 per cent pass rate for five A* to C grades including English and maths last summer, the lowest in the borough, but still above the government target of 30 per cent.
To help with the improvements, the school will receive £823,000 in government cash.
