A NEW outdoor classroom “at the heart” of a primary school has helped keep up attendance levels according to teachers.
The new classroom and garden at Hawes Down Junior School was built with a £1,900 grant and provides teachers a chance to move their lessons outside.
The covered decking also allows youngsters to stay outside in bad weather.
The garden is being used to grow vegetables for its furry residents, a rabbit and guinea pig.
Family worker Julie Barry said: “Getting the children involved with this project meant they made a real effort to come in to school to be part of it.
“It’s a relaxing place to spend time and it is right at the heart of our school.”
Pupils, staff and parents at the school in The Mead, West Wickham, spent eight weeks creating the new classroom.
