LEWISHAM: School rooftop protesters given eviction notice

11:27am Monday 22nd June 2009

PROTESTERS will be evicted from the roof of a school, two months after the demonstration began.

Lewisham Bridge Primary School, in Elmira Street, Lewisham, will be replaced with an all-age foundation school on the same site, due to open fully in spring 2011.

Since April 23, several mums and their supporters have been protesting on the school’s roof demanding students are returned to Elmira Street, after they were relocated in preparation for the building’s demolition.

However, the protesters were ordered off the school grounds after Lewisham Council was granted permission to evict them at a hearing at Bromley County Court on June 15.

Despite being given a week to leave voluntarily, the council issued an eviction notice today (June 22) giving the group until Wednesday (June 24) at 10.30am to come down before bailiffs are sent in.
