BROMLEY: College celebrates 50 years

Former and current students and staff prepare to look back at the changes which have shaped Bromley College.

Bromley College celebrates its 50th anniversary this month and a special day of events is planned to mark the occasion.

On June 20, tours will be held around the college, and there will also be the chance to record your video memories, talk to the tutors and explore the campus and new buildings.

From its beginnings in 1959 as Bromley Technical College, to the present day, the college has been delivering further and higher education courses to the Bromley borough and community.

Today its courses run from entry level to higher education – you can learn skills to further your career, and study in partnership with the University of Greenwich for a degree on your doorstop.

The history of the college tracks through the decades, showing the extraordinary growth of education and technology in the borough.

Original courses covered science, engineering, commerce and general education, but today it offers a range of subjects and vocational courses which equip the community for work.

The college’s social history is as exciting as its educational record; there were regular concerts in the 1960s in the College Hall from Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, and students organised exotic trips – one to Red Square in Moscow by bus, and fundraising in the 1980s for the Ethiopian Famine Appeal by raffling off Paul Weller’s guitar.

If you studied at Bromley College, or you know someone who did, you are being invited to a 50th Anniversary Celebration Day where you can tour the college, look at old memorabilia, have a drink and meet up with old friends.

The day marks 50 years of success and the impressive facilities which greet new students today are a long way from the early campuses.

Today the college is working through a £26m redevelopment which has already seen the opening of the towering Business and Professional Centre, a Learning Resource Centre, a new technology block and this summer, the refurbishment of the hair and beauty salons.

The event will take place between 10.30am and 3pm and although the event is free, you must obtain a ticket to gain entry.
