LEWISHAM: Mums' rooftop protest into second week but council refuses to budge

ANGRY mums have been protesting on the roof of a primary school for two weeks now, but the council is refusing to meet their demands.

Lewisham Bridge Primary School, in Elmira Street, Lewisham, will be replaced with an all-age foundation school on the same site, due to open fully in spring 2011.

But Lewisham Council plans to demolish the school this summer have been put on hold following the decision to grant the building Grade II listed status.

Pupils have already been re-located to a site in Deptford and several furious mums took to the roof of Lewisham Bridge in protest on April 23.

The mums have been on the roof day and night, and have vowed to continue the protest until the council returns pupils to the school.

Protestor Eleanor Davies, of Ermine Road, Lewisham, sends her five-year-old son Oliver to the school.

The 40-year-old said: “The council have still refused to meet us.

“It’s frustrating that the local authorities won't come speak to us but we are going to continue doing it.

“We are getting more and more support from people and we have collected more than 400 signatures for a petition.

“I really don’t think it’s over yet.”

A Lewisham Council spokeswoman said: "We respect this group’s right to protest, but we have provided many opportunities for parents and other interested parties to put forward their views.

“The council agreed some time ago to hold a meeting with parents, after the children had been in the new school site for a while, to discuss how well their children are settling in and any concerns they may still have about the decant arrangements.

"That meeting was held last week and went well."

I don't think they are after world domination, they are just fighting for what they believe is best for their children, which has to be praised. So they may not win but they are trying! maybe not enough people make a stand in this day and age.. be it on a roof or the ground.

Is this the best way to show what they believe in? The school is to be redeveloped, in to what appears to be a bigger better, brighter school.
This is called progress, things move on, and some times even get better! If these mothers can't accept that the school is changing, I suggest they take their kids of the school and go find a run down school elsewhere to put their kids in to.
Don't any of these mothers have work to go to? If they are 'house wives' who looks after the kids whilst the mums are sitting on the roof of the school looking like some prison protest.
GROW UP AND ACCEPT THAT THE SCHOOL IS CHANGING TO BETTER YOUR KIDS!

What do you know about this school? This is not progress, they are taking our children out of a school they are happy in, putting them in a building that does not even have drinking water or a playground for what? To build a 3-16 school that is too small to house the amount of children that go there that means some of our children will be left without a school to go to!!! The parents that are protesting on the roof are just doing what they can to stop this ridiculous proposal going through. So i suggest before you comment on anything with your small minded opinions you get the full story.
