Course Taster
IT and Computing
Age:
18
Course:
IT and Computing
Where?
Orpington College
Period:
Two years
Entry onto the course:
A - C grade in five GCSE's including Maths and English.
Reasons for chosing the course:
I've always been interested in technology and in my opinion, technology is the future. Before college I did a NVQ in IT and I've always been quite good at finding my way around a computer.
Areas the course covers:
The IT side looks at the use of Microsoft Excel, producing spreadsheets and design systems. In the second year we focus more on Microsoft Access to learn about creating different databases. In the computing modules we use programmes such as Borland and Delphi.
The other students:
Everyone is aged between 17 and 19 but the course is fairly male orientated. I am one of only three girls on the IT course and am the only girl on
computing.
Atmosphere:
It is really good and everyone gets on great. We share
different interests but we're always there to help each other. The teachers are really friendly and approachable. They always offer you guidance and support.
The future:
I have applied for university and hope to go to Southampton where I will study computing and game development. Graduating with a BSc honours in this will open all kinds of doors for me in the future.
