Construction related skills : (CRS) basic plumbing

Course:

Construction related skills (CRS) basic plumbing

Where?

CRS, Catford

Period:

Six months

Entry onto the course:

There is an aptitude test in literacy and maths and then an interview with the course tutor and a CRS administrator.

Reasons for choosing the course:

I've wanted to learn plumbing for a while and I read a flyer at a plumbing seminar which encouraged women to consider this course.

The course is free and they also have good childcare facilities.

Areas the course covers:

First we learned about health and safety. There is a little theory but it is mostly practical work.

We are taught how to attach radiators and bend pipes. I also attached drains and guttering and was shown how to make sure the angles are correct for the water to be able to run off.

The main part of the course and assessment involves fitting a full bathroom-suite and a photo-portfolio of our work.

The other students:

It was a nice small group of 10 students, including three girls and we all got on well.

Atmosphere:

The teacher was really supportive and got me back on my feet after I lost my job. The people at CRS offer advice with CVs and college applications. They also help organise work experience.

The future:

I may have a traineeship with Lewisham Council and eventually I'd like to set up my own business with trained friends.
