  • The biggest selling single of 1994 was Wet Wet Wet's Love is All Around' which, boosted by its use in the hit film Four Weddings and a Funeral, clung to the number one spot for 15 weeks in a row. But the Christmas number one belonged to boyband East 17 and their ballad Stay Another Day'.
  • The big films of the year were The Lion King, Speed, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Forrest Gump, with the latter winning the best picture Oscar.
  • On TV, the smash hit comedy series Friends made its debut. In June, people were gripped by live footage of O.J. Simpson fleeing from the police in a car chase. He was charged with the murder of his ex-wife.
  • Notable births included two child stars, American actress Dakota Fanning of War of the Worlds fame and English actress Dakota Blue Richards, who starred in the blockbuster film The Golden Compass.
  • Notable deaths included actors Telly Savalas and John Candy, former US president Richard Nixon and the suicide of Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain.
  • 1994 Star Fact: On March 12, 1994 the Church of England ordained its first female priest, Angela Berners-Wilson. She was made the rector of a country parish in north Wiltshire.
