A BRUTAL attack by a gang which left a man with a fractured skull has left residents scared for their safety.
Some are calling for a greater police presence in their area.
The 39-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman were attacked in Greenbay Road, Charlton.
According to residents, they were cornered by between eight and 15 black youths carrying concrete blocks and road signs.
The man, who has not been named, was hit on the head by a concrete block thrown by one of the youths.
Charity worker June West, who lives in Greenbay Road, claims the same gang of youths has been using her apartment block's communal gardens for the past two years.
The 49-year-old said: "About 15 youths congregate in our communal gardens.
"We have a lot of old people living here and everyone is afraid to use the garden."
Fellow Greenbay Road resident Matthew Kelly, 53, said: "I've been threatened on a number of occasions by the youths.
Although community police officers patrol the area during the day, residents say more needs to be done.
Ms West said: "Community police work until 5pm but it's no good to us when the problem only happens at night.
After the attack, which happened at around 7.50pm on April 26, the man was taken to a hospital in central London.
His condition was described as stable.
The woman suffered minor injuries during the incident.
Sergeant Adrian Musgrave, from the Charlton Safer Neighbourhoods Team, said: "We will not accept these kind of incidents in the area and we always take complaints about youth disorder seriously.
"Additional foot patrols have been put in place to provide further reassurance to the public."

A council spokesman said: "We will consider the suggestion of providing a lockable gate to the grassed area, but this will be subject to resources being available and to full consultation with all residents."
Six teenagers have been arrested in connection with the attack and have been released on bail. They are due to return to Plumstead police station on June 26.

Regardless of the colour of these youths involved, they could be white, green or sky blue pink for all I care, this was a disgusting cowardly act perpetrated by a pack of animals.
I hope the gentleman involved makes a quick and complete recovery.

They should be rounded up and culled like they do with vermin. If these people were destroyed you would cut the chances of them re offending by 100%. That's got to be a good thing.

As someone who lives in Charlton, this is very worrying. Not only the Police need to retake the streets but also empower the residents to do so. People like this 'gang' are nothing but bullys. If a citizen had giving them a good a**e whooping then they would have been the one in trouble with the law...the law is seriously messed up!

I used to live in charlton and it used to be a nice area,but it has been slipping down hill for quite some time now, glad i moved out of the area. Yes where is lets agree to differ with there seriously blinkered view on the world ?

this was in my opinion a typical attack by the youths of today im sure if it was one on one with fists instead of a great big rock the youth would have been of on his toes your very brave in your groups im old school and if i saw the pig that did it i would turn my back if he was getting a good kick in lets be honest the justice in this country works better for the scum than they dont care if they get caught it gives them street cred o yes and a slap on the wrist from the judge after trying to kill a man

This happens in my street - with us being the victims, yet the council wont do anything other then give us AA banding to move. We have had ALL windows broken, doors kicked in, assualts, thefts, vandalisim and racial abuse. The communtity team are great but only when on duty. The police cant do anything because "we cant find them" or "You didnt see anbody specific doing it!". This is regardless of the fact that we know who definately did it!!

We need to get these gangs of youths off our streets. We need more police Officers and PSCO'S working in the area 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Better street lighting and faulty street lighting repaired within 24 to 48 hours. Better security fencing and lockable gates to communal areas. Greenwich Council need to evict and ban these yobs and their families from entering the London Borough of Greenwich for causing havoc on our streets and in our neighbourhoods. Enough is enough we should not have to put with this. We hope our councillors, MPs, GLA Representative will work with the Police and Council to tackle this problem.

The media can really change the way issues have been seen. The articles will always make the victim look fully innocent yet not knowing why or how this incident occured. I think it would be wierd how boys would attack a man for no reason what so ever. Theres something behind this incident we do not know. Things like this dont happen for no reason. I hope the truth comes out and things are sorted out. Young teenagers are not ready to go to prison at the very start of their lives. To attack a 39year old man would take a lot of bravery. Think about the odds. These boys deserve their say honestly, not being biased against the victim.
