Football mob jailed for train violence
 |
| John de Bono was jailed and given a football banning order |
EIGHT people have been given football banning orders after violence on a train.
Seven of them were also given custodial sentences totalling more than 18 years.
The men were involved in a series of attacks after boarding two carriages of a train at Sydenham station at around 2.20pm on September 1 last year.
The train contained women, children and elderly people.
They attacked several Charlton Athletic supporters travelling to a game at Crystal Palace.
One Charlton fan suffered a broken nose.
Included in the gang was 21-year-old John de Bono, who lives in St Mary Cray High Street.
He was jailed for 30 months and banned from football matches for 10 years.
De Bono, along with six other men and a 16-year-old youth who cannot be named for legal reasons, all pleaded guilty to violent disorder.
During sentencing at Southwark Crown Court yesterday (Mar13), the incident was described as "mob behaviour at its worst".
Those involved have been banned from attending football matches in England and Wales and travelling on trains on a day when Crystal Palace or England are playing.
They are also banned from entering within 2,000m of a stadium where Crystal Palace or England are playing a match, and from entering pubs in Croydon when the Eagles are at home.
British Transport Police arrested them in a series of dawn raids at addresses across south London, Kent and Sussex.
Superintendent Martin Fry said: "Members of the travelling public, including law-abiding football fans, have the right to travel in safety on match days without fear of being abused or assaulted by a few rogue elements.
"The violence ordinary members of the public were subjected to on the day in question was completely and utterly appalling.
"The courts have sent a clear message this sort of behaviour is out of order and have rightfully supported our request for banning orders against these individuals.
"They have shown they can't behave when it comes to football-related activity and as a result they will now suffer the consequences of their actions."

Banned from watching Palace - we should be punishing these people, not rewarding them!

Please dont believe all you read or hear. One of these young men is my brother in law and was in the wrong place/wrong time and stood his own ground when faced with trouble from what happened to be the opposition as they call it in football. I can assure you that he is not a HOOLIGAN or CRIMINAL! He's a very respectable guy, and i cannot believe this case of injustice! All that's happened here is they are being made an example of, while real criminals get away with alot worse..........

Ha ha ha - that's so funny! It's so strange how the prisons are always so full of innocent people. People who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, people who have been stitched up, people who acted completely 'out of character'. Hmmm. If only the authorities would release all the 'wronged' people from jail then there wouldn't be those pesky overcrowding problems!
I assume the numerous witnesses and CCTV evidence in this case had nothing to do with your brother in law's conviction?

[bold]bold[/bold] u r all as bad as one another. your wishing violence on these people without knowing the facts or knowing anything about them. For people who are supposedly against crime and violence you have a very warped way of showing it. has noone ever told you 2 wrongs don't make a right. These people are paying for what they did albeit unjust. Mindless verbal attacks from pathetic back seat people like you just goes to show the world is full of idiots! You people should take a look at ur own lives and worry about whats going on in them rather than pick on people who are behind bars and can't defend their honour. talk about cowardness!!

Having sat in court the day these people were sentenced i know for a FACT (which is something noone here has apparently heard of) that what is printed in here is a load of rubbish there were no women or children or elderly attacked and this was never stated in court either. The so called "broken nose" was not and this was stated in court. Is it any wonder there are wrongly accused people in prison if even random strangers such as yourselves condemn people without knowing the truth or even caring to listen. If a newspaper can blatently lie about someone having a broken nose when in court the prosecution had to state that there was no broken nose as had been rumoured it makes you wonder what else they will write just to get people to read it.

Many under achievers, act in this way.Hyped up football games, now seem to attract trouble( home or away).
This mentality,is a result of too much expectation, from a game, not really relevant, to issues that are important.

This may seems all well and good, but I can only speak for the featured person on this article. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time and regretted what he did, which is why he went to the police station. Some of your comments are outrageous, and in many ways are as bad as the crime. He is a good person, and will be a loss to all of his friends and colleagues at Uni. I dont condone his actions, as he doesnt, but this sentence was too strong for such a promising young person, on the verge of gaining a 1st from Uni. Also this story is misleading, so anyone commenting solely on this basis of this article cant possibly make a true judgement. As I say I olny speak for the mentioned John de Bono, as I dont know anyone else involved.
Feel ashamed some of you for your silly and uninformed comments.

I would have thought being a Crystal Palace fan was punishment enough. Anyway, be reminded...
"The train contained women, children and elderly people." He pleaded GUILTY to the serious crime of violent disorder - what are you suggesting? That he should have been given a fine just because he is 'on the verge of gaining a 1st from Uni'? If it was out of character then I hope he learns from it and moves on - although with a criminal record he will be haunted by this for the rest of life. But the pity I have is for innocent members of the public who are subjected to thuggery like this.

Everyone will have their views, and this is mine, I feel its coming from a place of better informed. I haev agreed a punishment is nessesary, and however much he is my mate, it is. If you look at the relativity of the sentence compared to small sentences to less publicised crimes then it is long. Peado's get next to nothing compared to this.
Being at Uni isnt an excuse to act in this manor, nor is having done it after having a drink. But does making the future a tough prospect for John, even more so as he has potentially wasted 3 years at uni with nothing to show for it, as good idea. Im sure he wouldnt, but lesser people could find themselfs being led to re-offend.
I have spoken to the editor about the way this story was written, and she has reworded it, but its still very misleading.
I guess most of the people commenting on here are ignorant and uneducated anyway, I pitty some of the short sighted fools in this world.

The sentences were extremely harsh but the judiciary must be consistent and give stiff sentences to the Clowns who threw one of ours through the McDonalds window in Greenwich - that was 4 on 1 I believe and hence the comments above from you lot about one on one will fall on deaf ears.

As a couple of people have already written the reporting of this story has been misleading and distorted. I was in court last week and heard what was said , I also know that there was only one journalist present and therefore all of the papers / websites have run the story on the back of one persons impression. One of the defendants has been one of my best mates for 25 years , yes he was an idiot and he readily acknowledges that , did he set out to harm or frighten innocent people - No ! Were the Charlton fans on the train giving it the "big 'un" as the train pulled in to the station - Yes ! I don't condone what took place when they got on the train but all of a sudden the people already on the train are being made out to be angels - Wrong - They were giving it large until they saw how many Palace were on the platform and then they tried to shrink - Unfortunately for them and for the boys that are now banged up it was too late.
As a couple of people have already written the reporting of this story has been misleading and distorted. He has admitted that.So what is the problem?
People should be able to travel, without this behaviour.
I have no sympathy, many train journeys are filled with this kind of behaviour, that is not only, worrying, but needs to be addressed.

I think the point these people defending them are making is that, although agreeing that they are guilty, the combined sentencing for this group being "custodial sentences totalling more than 18 years" is clearly very severe considering the actual injuries received i.e. no more than one bloody nose (not broken).
