Heroes save elderly woman from fire

A BRAVE lorry driver and quick-thinking police officer rescued an elderly woman from her burning house this morning.

The off-duty female officer was passing the house on Dunkery Road, Mottingham, when she noticed smoke and flagged down the motorist.

He broke down the front door and carried the pensioner out, and an ambulance took her to Queen Mary's Hospital, in Sidcup, suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.

It is thought the wheelchair-bound grandmother, called Joan, lost two of her three cats in the fire, which broke out at around 5.30am.

Neighbours heaped praise on the lorry driver and police officer, and say their actions stopped the blaze from spreading along the row of terraces.

One said: "Without them that lady wouldn't have survived. Everyone thinks they're heroes.

"These houses would've gone and we wouldn't have known because we were asleep."

She said the pensioner, in her 70s, who suffers from heart problems, had tried to escape.

"She uses her zimmer frame at home and had dragged herself through the house which was full of smoke," said the neighbour.

Two fire engines, from Downham and Eltham, were called to the blaze, which destroyed half the ground floor.

Neighbouring smoke-logged homes were temporarily evacuated, with residents allowed back in at around 6.15am after the fire was extinguished.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and is under investigation. It is believed to have been accidental.

Did you see the fire? Do you know the courageous lorry driver and police officer? Add your comments below or call News Shopper on 01689 885717.

Hope the lady makes a full and speedy recovery. Well done to the lorry driver you should feel proud.

This old lady is probably a lifelong smoker who was careless with a cigarette, cigar or pipe as she cooked chips in an overheating pan full of boiling oil without taking the precaution of fitting smoke alarms in every room of the house.

Perhaps this incident will help her to kick the habit (and the chips).

Erastus

Can you stop belittling people in unfortunate events? They do not need it and we do not need to hear about your opinions on the matter. Haven't you ever wondering as you type such spiteful things that you are wrong?

I hope the lady will recover fully.

Maybe not, but he still has the right to express them.

I hope the woman makes a full and speedy recovery.

Maybe so, but would you like to read harsh comments about unfortunate people? I certainly would not.

I hear what you say and I understand. Sorry if I offended you. But at the end of the day what is there else to do other than ask the person (I'd like to think politely) to stop expressing belittling opinions. It may offend others more than you know.
Posted by: Your Lord, Erastus Theobald Piggott, The Kitchen on 2:00pm Thu 13 Mar 08
Unfortunately Malteaser, the truth is often harsh.

Many people of the elderly lady are smokers and become careless in their old age.

Perhaps she also accidentally kicked over an electric fire whilst attempting to escape the chip pan blaze?

In the case of Erastus, I don't see why everyone takes him so seriously.

And he may be right, it may have been a cigarette left to burn, or cooking gone wrong.

The important thing is that the woman made it out alive.

Erastus the fire happened at 5:30am so the report says so not sure an old lady would be cooking chips at that time of morning. Some of your comments do make me laugh but have you never stopped and thought about the people involved with this. The lady could have died and all you want to do it make fun of it. There is a time and a place - not sure this is either of them...

Please don't add a comment bad mouthing me as you say everyone has the right to their say.
Posted by: Your Lord, Erastus Theobald Piggott, The Hall on 2:23pm Thu 13 Mar 08
It is a well-known fact that old people need less sleep than the young.

This old lady had probably been up since about 3.17am and by the time 5 o'clock came round she was getting rather peckish and fancied a plate of homemade chips.

Perhaps she rose early because she craved a cigarette, have you not thought of that, Lisa?

Your Lord, Erastus Theobald Piggott
Posted by: J, Here on 2:24pm Thu 13 Mar 08
Lisa, I don't think Erastus is actually making fun of the situation. He put forward valid thoughts on what may have happened. He just didn't do it in a why that everyone will find appropriate.

I'm sure if someone came on and say "I wonder what caused the fire. Maybe it was a cigarette or she was cooking something", that would be okay. He just said it in a different way.

Why is so hard for you all to accept that age, cigarettes and a blazing chip pan fire were at the root of this incident?

I think you should all open your eyes a little wider and accept the views of Your Lord.

I bet Lin and Bigsteve both own 4x4s and clog up the streets of Bromley with their gigantic gas guzzlers.

Still, you will be paying the congestion charge soon, won't you Bromley residents?

Now, back to the story.

The fire was probably caused by a chain-smoking old lady who got up in the middle of the night because she craved nicotine and a plate of chips.

She dropped the cigarette down the side of her armchair and the chip pan on the stove caught fire because it was too hot.

As she had not fitted smoke alarms in the house she was not aware of the fire when she went upstairs to visit the lavatory.

On discovering blazing armchair and chip pan, she stumbled through the smoke and knocked over an electric fire which subsequently caused a third fire.

As someone who does not frequent the news shopper website regularly, as it would appear some of you do, I must say this bickering or whatever you wish to call it is totally infantile. Unless you 'Erastus' have insight into the circumstances surrounding this story that havn't been put to press, your ignorance is outstanding, for which you must be praised! Should you be pulled out of a house fire..I do wonder if you would appreciate such mocking, or maybe you would consider it normal given your distorted image of humanity and what is considered appropriate in such times.

As a regular reader of the site, I am of the opinion that there would be far less "bickering" if more people accepted that other people have opinions and they have every right to express them. As it stands now, those who launch the attacks against Eratus and anyone they don't agree with believe themselves to be the only ones entitled to an opinion.

Guys and Girls, please don't humour 'Piggott', thats the reason he (or she) makes these cringe-worthy statements - for the conflict. If Mr Bull, web editor is going to allow him to make such rash stereotypical and often derogatory statements then that is his choice. You, the readers choose to visit this site and by continuing to do so and commenting on comments made you are in a way endorsing those very comments. (?!) I don't doubt the number of comments made per story are used as a performance indicator of one sort or another. I suggest read the comment if you find it contradicts the rules then report it else just comment on the story or leave the site and go to another local news page. This is the last I'm going to comment Piggot's statements and yes, I have reported his posts.

How great it must be, to be so intuitive and know so much about what happened to a stranger. As her Daughter in Law, I can tell you that she was not "boiling oil" or "kicking over an electric fire" as she tried to escape death, and as to the matter of smoking in bed, how ridiculous. Also as a family we would like to give our immense thanks to the lorry driver, we have thanked the police officer in person. I too suffered a major house fire 8 years ago, we had to move out for 6 months, the trauma of such an event is catastophic, so we really feel that frivolous comments should not be made about our Mother by people who dont know the circumstances.

It has never been Your Lord's intention to wind anyone up; I think you all do a better job of that than I ever could. As for the comments, I have left more constructive comments about the story than any of my detractors who, let's face it, enjoy the prospect of having a go at Their Lord. It amazes me that weeks and months go by and you are still coming out with the same boring retorts. 'Get a life', 'get a job' etc, etc, etc. You bunch of frightful bores could not come out with anything original if your lives depended on it. You hurl insults at anyone who puts their point across in a different way to your badly spelt garbage. Not only are you unimaginative but many of you are thick as well. Thats just it they are NOT opinions they are assumptions. You assumed she was a smoker and burnt her own house down thats completely irrelevant and comments such as these do not help anyone and more importantly they offend most!! I know that if i was reading comments such as these and this had happened to a member of my family i would be very very upset! you are deliberately winding people up

Let's all just leave nice, sympathetic comments from now on.

Your Lord will start:

Oh, how Your Lord has suffered from sleepless nights after reading this terrible story.

I have been so worried about the little old lady who survived this horrific ball of flame with some very minor injuries.

I have prayed night and day for the three cats who were trapped inside the inferno but eventually rescued completely unharmed.

All my love goes out to this little old lady and her three cats as well as her family, friends, relatives and indeed anyone who knows her.

I will even start doing the Lottery because if I win I am going to give all the money to the little old lady and her moggies.

Your Lord, Erastus Theobald Piggott

Such a hateful thing to say. How do you get through life carrying so much hate with you?

If we could have this conversation else where then i would because i feel disrespectful using this page that should be for the comments of genuine people not for people to have to tell you huys to shut up because absolutly no one cares what you have to say!

Lozza, show me where I've been hateful.

I would never wish misfortune on another person as you have.

My Lord Erastus you have indeed made some very important comments on here about this story. Cigarettes are the cause of lots of fires and I think all the people here who are trying to deny that are just silly smokers who hate to be targeted because of their filthy habit.
Love Kitten x

Lozza, fourth comment down, I wished the woman a speedy recovery.

Yes, I have defended Erastus's right to free speach. The same way I would defend your right or anyone else's.

Yes, I am a very sarcastic person, it's one of the many services I offer. However, I never take it to the level of hate that you go to. You're just straight out hateful. I'm sorry, but it's true.
