POLICE officers have released CCTV images of three men they would like to speak to in connection with a series of cash machine thefts.

Victims report being approached by two or more men when they are using cash machines in north Kent.

The men stand close to the machine and note the victim's pin number as they use the device.

Kent Police says one of the group distracts the victim by tapping them on the shoulder.

When they turn around to find out what is going on, another man removes the card from the machine.

The victim is left thinking their card has been lost in the ATM, say officers.

However, it is being used to withdraw money at another machine close by.

A Kent Police spokesman says 13 incidents at ATMs across Dartford and Gravesend are being investigated.

Anyone with information should call 01322 283096 or 0800 555111.

PC Roger Griffiths, who is investigating the crimes, has advised people to take care when using cash machines.

He said: "Before you think about using any cash machine, make sure you check there is nothing untoward or unusual about how it looks.

"Check around the insert slot in particular to ensure a false front has not been stuck on to the machine.

"Cardholders should not allow themselves to be distracted when using cash machines and should keep their card in sight at all times.

"Take care not to let anyone see you entering your pin number.

"If you have any suspicions about the machine or people waiting around nearby, then do not use it and report the matter.

"We advise people to check their bank statements on a regular basis to look for any unusual transactions or withdrawals, which they did not make.

"If they have any concerns their card or their PIN number has been stolen or being used fraudulently, then they should call their bank immediately to get the card cancelled."
