TONY Blair needs to think again if he believes a majority of voters supports the Government's ID cards scheme.

The Prime Minister might claim the scheme has overwhelming support, but this is not reflected in the results of a poll on News Shopper's site.

In our vote opinion was divided almost exactly down the middle.

A total of 46.9 per cent of people who responded said they are in favour of ID cards.

However, another 50.8 per cent of people voted against the scheme.

The 'don't know' vote was 2.3 per cent.

Remarkably for a web-poll, this reflects all recent published polls by professional polling organisations. Public opinion is evenly divided, but the trend has been against the scheme for two years, and we predict more people will continue to oppose it as more realise the full implications.

I presume those who support ID cards do so on the basis of beliving the justifications put forward by the Government. Given that we have seen that Blair is capable of "managing the presentation" beyond all recognition of the facts, my instinct is to disbelive. As I have yet to hear a single justification that stands even a cursory examination, that instinct is confirmed. Someone, somewhere is not telling us the truth.
