HUNDREDS of thousands of O2 customers are still unable to use their mobile phones after the operator's network crashed.

Engineers worked through the night to fix the fault but many mobile users are facing a second day of being unable to make or receive calls.

The network's text messaging service is also affected by the fault, while customers have had issues accessing data services such as the internet.

Network problems started to be reported early on Wednesday afternoon, but it not yet know how many of 02's 23 million UK customers have been affected.

A company spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that the problem with our mobile service is due to a fault with one of our network systems, which has meant some mobile phone numbers are not registering correctly on our network.

"We, and our central supplier, have deployed all possible resources and have been working through the night to restore service as soon as possible."

The spokeswoman said it was unclear exactly how many have been affected by the nationwide problem, but estimated it was "thousands" at least.

A message on O2's Twitter feed read: "Our engineers are doing their level best to resolve the current network issue.

"Apologies for the inconvenience caused."

No timescale for the repairs has been given.

Tesco, which uses O2's masts for its Tesco Mobile network, confirmed that some of its customers were being affected this morning.

"We are currently seeing a problem on our network affecting some of our customers." a spokeswoman said.

"There is an issue within part of O2's core network that is preventing some mobile phones from successfully connecting.

"We're sorry about the inconvenience this may cause our customers, and O2 engineers are dealing with the problem to restore full service as soon as possible."

lol! I'm at work and lots of people are moaning about it. They're gutted because they can't check Facebook or send a message to someone. People these days are totally lost without a mobile phone. Get a life.

Really. So for example if someone come across a crash in a remote country lane they would have to drive off to find a phone.

We all used to cope without them, but now people are in crisis when they're down for a day. They are certainly useful and have some very good aspects such as in emergencies. However, people should get a grip on reality. It's not the end of the World that you can't write some pointless status update on Facebook or speak to your mate loudly on the train. Used correctly, they're great. However, abused as the vast majority seem to do, they are antisocial.

To those recommending finding a public phone to use, honestly can't remember the last time I saw one which was working, which hadn't been vandalised.
Don't judge people who are complaining about not having signal, these people, including myself pay for a service which cannot currently be used. O2 are being less than cooperative and while the service is down we are still being charged. Now tell me how happy you would be paying for a service which is not working?

Also what about people who need their phones for business purposes, my friend is an independent driving instructor, neither his personal or work mobile work. He can't sit in all day next to his home phone can he when he needs to be out working?

Not saying it's ideal, and there's definitely people who do rely on their mobiles for work. Just pointing out that it's not the disaster of armagedon proportions that some people are making it out to be. The vast majority of people (I reackon 99%) should be able to get through their day without too much trouble and without adverse effect. Let's remember that even with O2 service down, one can still make emergency calls on a mobile.
