A landmark £20m community facility in Deptford officially opened this week with a series of events.

The Deptford Lounge is part of a development which includes a new state-of-the-art home for Tidemill Academy Classrooms there envelop a large courtyard garden and school facilities are shared with the community, including a rooftop sports pitch.

Based in Giffin Square, it also has the Resolution studios, featuring 38 flats with nine studios for businesses along with an exhibition space.

News Shopper: Launch week at £20m Deptford Lounge Highlights of a packed opening week included a free appearance by political comedian Mark Thomas, while children were entertained by author Steve Cole - author of the Cows in Action series who made a visit for World Book Day.

Among the visitors to the gold-coloured copper-clad building were Lewisham Deptford MP Joan Ruddock and Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock.

"Together with new homes, new artists' units, gallery space and new parking facilities, the complex will strengthen the local economy, improve business opportunities and build upon Deptford’s reputation for artistic excellence."

The lounge opens on one side onto Giffin Square, a renovated public open space and to the other side sits the new Wavelengths pool.
