THEY’RE bad, they’re bad, they’re really, really bad.

That’s the opinion of more than 600 people on Asda’s plans to share a site with B&Q at Belvedere which they say will kill local business and drastically increase traffic.

They have signed up to a petition displayed in local shops organised by Belvedere Against Asda Development (BAAD).

Baad has also begun putting up posters in shops, leafleting people who live in the area and has set up a Facebook page.

One of the organisers Amit Patel, who owns Belvedere News Food and Wine in Gilbert Road, said: “People will really, really struggle - it’s already very slow at the moment due to the economic climate.

“It could lead to the final nail in the coffin for some of the small shops to be honest.”

Mr Patel claimed many customers sympathised and there was a lot of concern about road safety in the area, particularly with three schools in close proximity.

Ward councillor Cllr Kerry Allon, whose letter on the subject is published in News Shopper this week, is backing the campaign.

He said: “It will have a detrimental effect on the local economy - shops will close and businesses will go.”

Cllr Allon added: “The other side is this plan will cause sheer travel chaos.

“If you multiply the current traffic by 10 you’ve got a nightmare. This isn’t the right place for it.”

The plans - which it is claimed will create 300 jobs - recently went on show at Belvedere and Erith Congregational Church.

Asda senior property communications manager Chris Martin said: “The views of this group do not reflect the majority of feedback received at our recent successful public exhibition.

“Our investment plans will bring shoppers back into Belvedere which can only help the whole of the community.

"We are, though, always happy to work with community groups in the development of our plans and to hear ideas that they may have. We will be making contact with this group to see if we can meet with them."
