Taimoor Sheikh, who owns and operates the McDonald’s restaurant in Woolwich, is celebrating with his crew after their restaurant cleaned up at the prestigious annual Loo of the Year Awards, widely regarded as the Oscars of the public convenience world.

They were awarded top marks with a five-star status in the independent Loo of the Year Awards.

The awards have been identifying the best toilets in Britain since 1987, making it a standard setter for all those who provide ‘away from home’ facilities for staff and customers.

Taimoor commented: “We prioritise making every aspect of a visit to McDonald’s of the highest possible standard.

"We believe that everyone deserves clean, safe and well-appointed toilet facilities. We ensure that these high standards are across the board, catering for everyone including disabled visitors and parents with small children.”

Loo of the Year contenders, with the owner’s or manager’s permission, can be nominated by anyone - by staff, customers, visitors, managers, owners or contractors.

Following nomination, the entries are critiqued by an independent Loo of the Year Awards inspector. Entrants were judged on a wide range of criteria, including signage, décor, fixtures and fittings, air quality as well as overall standards of cleanliness and management.

McDonald’s in Woolwich recently installed new urinals that have been awarded a Waterwise Marque, the first scheme in the UK to highlight water efficient products.

Each of the two new urinals will save the restaurant, on average, 100,000 litres of water per year and subsequently reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 17.5KG, which is significantly reducing the restaurant’s water consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.
