BIGGIN Hill remembered the key role it played in the Battle of Britain at the weekend.

The airport held its first ever family open day on Saturday, which recreated the feel of Biggin Hill from 1940, when it was a front line fighter base in the war against the Luftwaffe.

There was a Battle of Britain memorial flight along with a display of military vehicles and planes.

History display group 212 Squadron helped relive the era dressed in uniform with authentic equipment and period vehicles.

Pyrotechnics, high falls and acrobatics were also among the entertainment performed by a stunt team.

Airport managing director Jennifer Munro said: β€œThe family open day was designed to be a completely different event from the traditional Biggin Hill Air Fair, opening the airport up to our neighbours and creating a relaxed, fun day out.

"I would like to thank everyone who supported it in such good spirit and appreciated the chance to welcome so many visitors.

"Judging by the uptake of the bus tours of the airport, I am really encouraged by the interest that exists in the business.

"I am relieved that the weather held out in our favour – and that of the wing walkers and parachutists!

"We have a business aviation trade show taking place at our new hangar this week, which has boosted occupancy at local hotels so there is a lot of energy in and around Biggin.”
