A PRIMARY school has become the latest to benefit from a scheme which recycles old bikes.
Nigel Hill, owner of Sidcup Cycles, with children from St Augustine of Canterbury CofE School who have benefitted from a scheme to donate recycled old bikes to young people
Children from St Augustine of Canterbury CofE School in St Augustine’s Road, Belvedere, have just taken delivery of 14 bikes.
The scheme run by Sidcup Cycles and Bexley Council encourages people who have unwanted bikes they no longer use to donate them to the shop in Station Road, Sidcup.
Shop owner Nigel Hill refurbishes them and makes them roadworthy.
The shop then donates them to borough schools or groups.
Together with headteacher Elizabeth Stevens, six children went to the shop to collect the bikes.
They also helped put up posters advertising the scheme and interviewed Mr Hill.
During the three years the council has been involved with the scheme, 154 bikes have been donated.
Mr Hill said: “We are a family-run store which has been based in the borough for more than 15 years.
“This is our way of helping our community and giving younger residents the opportunity to experience the enjoyment and freedom cycling brings.”
He asked parents buying their children new bikes for Christmas to think of donating any old ones to the shop.
