THE BNP is calling on its supporters to threaten to boycott businesses which advertise in News Shopper.
BNP councillor Paul Golding has spearheaded a campaign to get the party's supporters to threaten to boycott businesses who advertise with New Shopper.
Following an article we ran about Paul Golding, a BNP councillor in Swanley St Mary’s, supporters of the party have contacted three of our advertisers saying they would have no further dealings with them if they continued to use your favourite paper to promote their businesses.
The article concerned quoted several residents and councillors saying Councillor Golding had “done nothing” for the community he was elected to represent.
Despite repeated attempts to contact Cllr Golding for him to have his say, he never returned our calls.
Yet shortly after the piece went on our website, a comment appeared from a Cllr Paul Golding calling the article “bilge” and suggesting he was always available for a comment.
As part of the BNP’s Operation Fightback, an email was sent to BNP supporters claiming to be from party leader Nick Griffin, called Time to Fight Back Against News Shopper Lies!
The message said News Shopper was “a particularly venomous anti-British left-wing propaganda outlet” which had “spewed lies for years”.
It then singled out three companies which advertise with us — Wise Bedding in Broadway, Bexleyheath; double glazing suppliers Camelot, based in Maidstone Road, Sidcup, and Wellingtons Electrical, of Bexley Road, Erith, and Westmoreland Road, Bromley.
When News Shopper called Cllr Golding about this, this time he answered his phone and admitted he had created the message.
He said: “I am not speaking to the News Shopper as we think you are a bunch of lying scumbags.
“You are poisoning the minds of south-east London and north Kent with a lot of Labour-created nonsense.
“You’re a vilifying left-wing gutter newspaper.”
When asked whether urging people to boycott businesses during a recession would be bad for the local economy, Cllr Golding said it was “absolute nonsense”.
"Vengeful hate campaign"
WE CONTACTED the three companies targeted by the BNP.
They had each been inundated with calls and emails from the party’s supporters.
Derek Mountney, managing director of Camelot, says hurting News Shopper would hurt local businesses.
He said: “I think it’s bad if they have an issue with the News Shopper and pick on certain companies in the paper to try and stop them advertising.
“If the BNP does not agree with what was in the paper their issue should be with News Shopper and not with innocent companies which advertise in the paper at a difficult time in all industries.”
The two other businesses declined to comment.
In his comment on our “smear article”, Cllr Golding called Councillor John Underwood (pictured below), who was quoted in the story, a “cretin”.
Cllr Underwood, a Labour councillor for the same ward as Cllr Golding, said: “I have been called worse. He's saying I’m a cretin because I have criticised him.
“It emphasises what sort of person he is.
"As BNP, that's the sort of people we are dealing with.”
Councillor Philip Roy McGarvey, a Lib Dem councillor for Farningham, Horton Kirby and South Darenth, said: “My personal reaction is it is despicable.
“This campaign is purely vengeful and I’m sure people would not take it seriously.
“If the only thing he says is this kind of vengeful attack on your paper and retailers, that speaks volumes for the man.
“If I was to launch a hate campaign against any company which upset me I would look very foolish.
“If he's going to enter politics he needs to take the rough with the smooth and he has not learnt to take the knocks yet.”
"Shades of Nazi Germany"
GERRY Gable, the publisher of anti-fascist magazine Searchlight, says the BNP’s “bullying tactics” had “shades of Nazi Germany”.
He said: “The BNP is very good at organising people to email local newspapers in protest, but those who do email are largely not from the area.
“This is typical of far right extremist organisations.
"The first thing they want to do is silence the media.”
The BNP says the party used a similar method of “fighting back” against the Manchester Evening News (MEN), which it said “worked wonders”.
The MEN told News Shopper it ran a series of articles about the BNP during the recent European elections, but the party’s campaign of calling on supporters to boycott the paper’s advertisers did not have any effect.

Another fantastic article which again exposes the web of lies and hypocrisy surrounding the BNP.
If I was the owner of one of these local businesses being despicably targeted I would actually be glad that none of the Barmy Nutjob Pariahs were going to be darkening my door anymore. Some people's money is better than others.

Just the same as all the BNP supporters' previous comments.
I am trying to imagine how the BNP stormtroopers, who have implicitly obeyed their orders to defend Golding, must be feeling.
My apologies, I quoted the wrong text a couple of comments back. I don't mind apologising when I am wrong, unlike some people.

As for why the BNP is claiming the odd council seat and making other insignificant political inroads around the country, it's because the party preys on people's ignorance, stupidity and fear.
It targets run-down pockets of the country where unemployment and crime are high, housing is poor, education standards are low and people feel let down by the system, ad so are easily manipulated and turned. It also targets areas where it knows a certain proprtion of people are going to be racist and therefore sympathetic to its cause.

In this country, we can't trust politician or the media, you are all getting your knickers in a twist about a councillor in Swanley (Who was at least voted in by the local people) at least they know who there councillor is, I live in Abbey Wood and I've not meet or even seen seen my local MP or Councillor but I've seen community decline over the years.
Taking in consideration where most off you lot seem to come from, he's not even your local Councillor but you all got opinions on him.
The one right we still got, is who we vote for but I think some off you lots object to people even having that right - people want to vote for the BNP that there right and I've for one would not take that way.
I voted for the conservative party and will do in the next election but who ever gets in will not be able turn this country around, we all going to pay a heavy price.
13/10/09
bexleyman says...
I've no qualms with letting people vote for whichever political party they want, it is a birthright and I'm sure that's something all News Shopper voters will universally agree on.
However can you really judge the BNP to be a "POLITICAL party?"
I for one would certainly not describe this organisation as political, not strictly anyway. More a unified network of racist thugs who manage to dupe the stupid into thinking they are actually political.
Vote for who you want, well as long as it's not Tory!
In seriousness, anyone can vote for who they want, but I simply cannot agree to letting people vote for this racist institution that spouts bile propaganda rather than election manifesto. There is no place for the BNP in our politics! We do not want people voting for a non-political party on non-political issues.

And like various other people on the other thread such as L Hammond, northbynorth etc, you are still incapable of reading properly. It appears a small group of BNP supporters, possibly just one person, has hijacked the threads by registering to post comments on this site using multiple aliases. They have then been agreeing with everything their various personalities have written, or attempting to disrupt the discussion between people who actually have something genuine to say.
This person, or people, has been registering multiple accounts using email addresses provided by a dubious service which generates random email addresses that expire after 10 minutes.
We are looking into this but in the meantime I would urge people to show caution when reading SOME of the comments being posted.

One slight point I would take issue with though is your reference to News Shopper as a small local paper. We're far from small. News Shopper covers a large area of south London and north Kent and is read by hundreds of thousands of people each week, in addition to our website getting more than 40,000 visitors every week.
You can under-estimate us if you want but I'm sure there are many people following our coverage and watching every calamitous BNP move with interest.
13/10/09
NastyMrTom says...
Well no. How Paul handles it reflects directly on the party and is an indicator of what we are to expect from similar new councillors.
The BNP are pushing hard to be a legitimate and respected party mainly on the back of the new swell of support in recent months. This new support should be treated with some respect surely ?
I can't think of a much better forum to raise issues with a local councillor than the local paper. Let's not attack the validity of a service that you're currently using to muddy the waters of what would seem a very simple accusation.
I'd have to have some understanding of your views to relate them to the average voting decision. What I would say though is that the BNP represent a very extreme opinion. That's not something that most voters could gloss over despite the BNP's best attempts to down play their views (telling in itself) no matter what change this may instigate. Racism is not acceptable to the majority and this in itself is enough to merit the close scrutiny of it's new elected representatives

What they are saying is:
1) That they would like their elected councillors to fulfil the role that they were elected to do.
2) That they would like them to be honest.
3)That they would like them to use well reasoned argument rather than use bully-boy tactics when challenged.
Councillor Golding, it would appear, has failed on all counts.
13/10/09
Simon Bull says...
I do occasionally like to express my own opinions on our comment threads and blogs. I enjoy interacting with readers. Any 'political' thoughts are absolutely mine and not the newspaper's.
People are of course entitled to think what they like about the BNP.
As for multiple IDs, there are no set rules but there are limits when some people, or more likely one person, can be considered to be taking things too far and abusing the system.

As for the BNP supporters describing the News Shopper as 'a small local paper', I think that they're just miffed that the News Shopper dares to question their actions (or lack of in Councillor Golding's case). Unlike another newspaper in the area (which is a small newspaper in every sense of the word), the News Shopper is a decent community newspaper that has morals and doesn't accept the BNP's tainted money for advertising.
Still, I'm sure that the BNP's adverts sit nicely among the sordid sex ads in that downmarket rag!
14/10/09

I like interacting with readers and joining in discussions where appropriate. I've also got no problem at all dealing with trouble-makers or defending our stories where it's needed.
I tend to think that if a newspaper is ruffling the feathers of a political party, whether it's the BNP or whoever, then it's doing a good job.

Mr Griffin should be allowed on Question Time. People seem to be worried that by giving the BNP airtime it will help promote their cause. Personally, I doubt that. No matter what Nick says during the show (and believe me, he is going to be bombarded with questions) it won't change the minds of any Tory, Labour or Lib Dem voters that are watching the show. Fact. The BNP "target voters" - which as a demographic are predominantly white, working class, disillusioned Brits - won't be watching the show anyway. I cant see Steve, a plumber from Bradford, saying to his missus "Ay oop luv, Question Time's about to start, I right fancy a bit of heated political debate after a hard day on job"
At best, Nick will just about defend his manifesto, possibly in a cohesive manner, without changing the opinion of anyone present. At worst, he'll be torn to pieces like a sacrificial lamb and his meltdown will be plastered across the UK press on Friday morning.
I'll wager the latter, but let's wait and see.

You know full well that the BNP are only considering this move because the law is forcing them. They've tried fighting the proposal but have decided that the legal costs will bankrupt the party (which would be a shame) so they've backed down.

In a civilized society, such far-right, extremist views will never be tolerated.
Don't get me wrong, my political leaning is right wing and I actually share some of the concerns of the BNP.
I think it's disgraceful that asylum seekers cross several European countries before settling here - we've got to stop being a "soft touch".
We do need to restore a sense of "Britishness" and stop this fear of flying the Union Jack in case it offends someone.
And I don't agree with positive discrimination in the workplace due to ethnic (or any other) background - a person should get a job due to ability, nothing else.
So I want a party that will address those concerns. But I don't want a party that will pay for some of my best friends to repatriate to their "homeland" (despite being born here). I don't want a party that will make my gay pal at work a target for abuse. I don't want a party representing me that is littered with ex-cons and thugs. And I don't want a party that threatens local newspapers and businesses for merely printing a story.
All the major parties have let us down and this country needs to get back on track, but the BNP is NOT the answer. If you're happy to be associated with this bullying, racist, lying bunch of cowards then that's your prerogative, but please don't expect anyone else to respect your views.

Dartbored your post I think shows the main issues that people do vote BNP, maybe other partys that dont want BNP to get votes should also look at these issues, As said before i dont agree with all the BNP policies and i dont think most people that vote for a party do agree with 100% of their policies, but maybe the other partys should look at why people do. Without assuming they are all just yobs who dont know what their talking about
16/10/09

I made a similar point in my blog, actually. It is up to the main parties to prove themselves in order to prevent the more disillusioned among us from voting BNP. The BNP thrives on the mistakes of the main parties in the same way that it feeds on the ignorance and prejudices of those who support it. You will never convince decent, fairminded people that voting BNP is even an option. I wish you would realise this simple fact.

Take tourism - it generates £52 billion pounds a year to our economy - how many non-whites are going to want to visit the UK with the BNP in charge? None, that's how many.
But according to your theory, that's fine. Because as long as they do the few things that YOU want them to, you can conveniently forget about those other policies that you don't agree with. The policies that will actually destroy the country you're all so desperate to save.

and this...
"Anyone who fills their chest freezers with frozen pizzas from Iceland = scum"
Perhaps this will help...
"Anyone from Thamesmead, Erith, Dartford or Swanley = SCUM"
Remember now?
Yes just a tiny few of untold examples of the customers of local businesses being called 'scum'...the customers of local businesses which sell hoodies, the customers of Primark and Iceland, the customers of businesses in Thamesmead, Erith, Dartford or Swanley, and of course many people who run businesses in those areas live in them, ditto their employees.
Yet despite repeated calls from various people for the News Shopper to put a stop to the constant insults and offence to local businesses, News Shopper readers and visitors to the News Shopper website - both the paper edition and site carry much advertising of course - the News Shopper insisted that poster had the right to keep on and on and on insulting and offending them.
