Local Business owner Darren Cruse of Auto Cruse Services, Gravesend, Kent has supported apprenticeships for the last 15 years by providing work placements crucial to an apprentice completing the practical aspect. Darren Cruse said “We have had 10 or more apprentices in the last 15 years and have two at this time. I will continue take more in the future as I support apprenticeships and helping young people work towards a promising career”. Mr Cruse pledged a placement for Katie Anderson to complete her Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in vehicle and repair. Katie Anderson from Gravesend, Kent started her learner journey in 2010 as a full time student at North West Kent College, studying Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Level 2. After completing the year course Katie was eager to continue with her career whist still working towards a qualification. Katie says “Apprenticeships are great, because you are working and learning at the same time and gain invaluable hands on experience with an employer. I am really enjoying my placement and studying for my qualification”.

International property and infrastructure group Lend Lease whose portfolio includes the UK’s number one fashion, leisure and events destination, Bluewater, Kent, pledged placements for horticulture and maintenance apprenticeships in April 2011. After an enormous response from more than 300 applicants, Danny Kisser from Erith, Kent was selected for Bluewater’s first Level 2 maintenance operations apprentice placement. Danny said: “I would recommend an apprenticeship scheme, as it gives you great ‘hands on’ experience and good knowledge of the work environment on a day to day level.“ Danny works under the guidance of maintenance manager Ryan Sutcliffe who added: “The apprentices are a good asset to the department and an apprenticeship scheme is a good way of introducing young people to building a service environment.“

The Marriott Hotel in Bexleyheath pledged to offer a hospitality and catering apprenticeship in response to the News Shopper 112 campaign. The Marriott decided it not only wanted to employ a full time member of staff but also help the successful applicant gain a nationally recognised qualification. Ryan Anderson from Dartford beat off stiff competition to take on the apprenticeship. Since starting work with the international hotel chain, Ryan has been gaining handson experience as a commis chef, working under the guidance of the Bexleyheath Marriott’s executive head chef, David Hayes. David Hayes said: "Ryan has joined us at the Bexleyheath Marriott Hotel and has settled into the team extremely well. During this short period Ryan has served our guests during breakfast and has had many comments about the level of service and food he produces, well done Ryan." Ryan has said "I am really enjoying my experience at the Marriott Hotel, even though the early mornings are hard, it is always rewarding to see happy guests at the end of my day."
