Once again Welling United manager Jamie Day was forced to make changes when visiting in-form Forest Green Rovers.

His team gave a strong performance. however, and were good value for their point.

Ross Lafayette was unable to take part and with Lee Clarke being eased in and out gently, Harry Beautyman and Harry Cornick came in.

Both teams spent the first fifteen minutes feeling each other out but only a cross from James Norwood that landed on the roof of the net threatened.

Norwood had the first true shot at goal from a half cleared corner but smashed his effort over from the edge of the penalty area.

Lee Hughes had an effort well blocked by Barney Williams before the hosts had to make a change with Jared Hodgkiss replacing Marcus Kelly.

Another Norwood shot went wide shortly before the break after he created his own opening.

Tobi Sho-Silva combined well with Toby Ajala early in the second half before his low shot was well claimed by a diving Sam Russell.

Hughes and Norwood then combined to give Matt Taylor a chance but he shot over from the edge of the box.

Taylor then hit a shot across the face of goal just beyond Hughes a Forest Green attempted to up the pace.

Welling made two changes with twenty minutes remaining bringing on Lee Clarke and Jake Gallagher for Ajala and Cornick.

Forest Green followed suit with a double change three minutes later that saw Hughes and Taylor replaced by Luke Rodgers and Danny Wright. The withdrawl of two strikers exemplified how well centre backs Quade Taylor, Alfie Mawson performed.

The Wings were given a let off, saving the linesman's blushes, when Russell's long clearance found Norwood who appeared well offside however, the England C striker squared behind Rodgers.

Three corners in quick succession gave the hosts hope but none tested Lee Butcher and Norwood headed wide from Anthony Barry's chip in.

Forest Green pressed hard in the latter stages and Butcher made a fantastic point blank save as Rodgers thought he had won the match.

Chris Stokes had one last chance after a powerful run by Wright but shot meekly at Butcher.

Eddie Oshodi's foul on Vasilous Karagiannis resulted in the only yellow card of the game as Welling looked to sneak the points on the break in injury time.

Day will have three days to evaluate the fitness of his team before the Wings entertain Braintree Town on Tuesday night.
