'100' caravans have been spotted in a field in Crayford, after travellers pitched up yesterday and more joined them today.

The field is near Maxim Road opposite Sainsbury's supermarket and the greyhound stadium.

A woman who lives nearby, who did not want to be named, said: "It started off yesterday with about 30 or 50 caravans, and today there are even more, I'd say about 100.

"You could here the generators going all night and there's a smell in the air - a burnt smell, the smell of burning."

A police spokesman said: "Police were made aware at 4.29pm on Tuesday August 26 that a number of vehicles and caravans had set up in a field off Maxine Road in Crayford.

"Officers attended the site and are working with the landowners to resolve the matter."

They can leave as much mess as they like. There know they wont have to foot the bill anyway.

Got to love this country.

Firstly I would like to say there are not 100! There are 20-30.

Secondly as a local resident it is appalling.
The land is owned by Sainsburys and this is the 3rd time in 6 months they have set up camp.
Sainsburys then fail to clear up the rubbish and it is left to blow across to the local houses.
Sainsburys also fail to secure the site, despite numerous managers promising they would.

More taxpayer money to be wasted on these folk I guess then. Can't wait for next tax bill and the thought of how it's being spent.

Why can't the government find a solution to this. If you want to come to our country and work and pay taxes and have no criminal record then fine. If you want to take the p1ss then it isn't and look elsewhere for a home. Should apply to all who want to live on our island including Irish travellers and those from farther afield.

Successive governments have created this situation and if there was a party now that could sensibly solve the problem of immigration while being able to run the economy then they would get my vote.

Wouldn't it be a great idea for some builder to come along and bulldoze the lot, preferably while they sleep. Perhaps then some of them may get the message that they really are not wanted in the area and to roam off back to where they started out from, but then again, where they started out from, they are probably not wanted there either. Can the government not find them an uninhabited island and dump the lot of them there to fend and clear up for themselves? IF ONLY.
