A heavy thunderstorm has caused torrential rain across the area - and flooded this Lewisham road.

Andre Bennett uploaded a video online of the flooding at Lewisham Way near Loampit Vale roundabout, writing: "Lewisham is under water."

Twitter user Julie Welch wrote: "I'm on the middle of it. Expecting locusts to arrive on Lewisham station roof any mo."

Ruari Lea, who works at the Hill Station cafe in Telegraph Hill, told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Biblical is definitely the word to describe it.

"We had a full house and then all of a sudden we had Niagara Falls enter the building.

"We were covered in about three or four inches of water everywhere while people were still eating - it was complete havoc."

But it's not just Lewisham. In Forest Hill someone needed to be rescued by the London Fire Brigade from their flooding Sunderland Road basement flat.

A crew was called at 2.37pm to rescue the occupant, with water coming through from street drains outside. They stayed on the scene to pump water out of the property.

The floods have certainly surprised people:

In Greenwich it almost looked like the Cutty Sark had set sail again...

Localised rain is expected throughout this afternoon until around 5pm, according to the Met Office.

Earlier, Southeastern said that, owing to flooding at Kidbrooke, country-bound lines were closed. These reopened at around 5pm.
