Part of Woolwich town centre was cordoned off this afternoon following reports of a suspect package.

The Woolwich Centre and council offices on Wellington Street were among the buildings that were evacuated with staff gathering in General Gordon Square after rumours of a suspect package in the post room.

Twitter user @Swashcj wrote: "Been evacuated with no fire alarm, the roads all blocked off so many police about. It all happens in woolwich."

Adrian Green from the Woolwich Grand Theatre, which is next to the town hall, said the scare started at around 3pm but was over after around 90 minutes.

He said: "The bomb squad were here but everyone's being left back in now. There's nothing to worry about."

A spokesman for Greenwich police said: "The building and immediate area was evacuated. The package has since been deemed safe."
