Dorothy Perkins, Burtons and Evans are closing their stores in Dartford town centre this Saturday.

Signs have gone up in all the shops in the Orchard Shopping Centre in High Street confirming the news which has been rumoured for many months.

The stores have been open in the centre since it opened on September 28, 1989.

Customers have expressed their disappointment of the closures to staff.

It is believed most of the staff will be transferred to other branches- the nearest being Bluewater, Gravesend and Bexleyheath.

The reason for the closure is believed to be that the 25 year leases are now up and will not be renewed.

A spokesman for Arcadia said: "We are constantly reviewing our store portfolio across the group, and leases continually expire or come up for renewal.

"We are always looking at how to shape our store portfolio, investing in flagship stores, and increasing our brands' presence on-line.

"When leases expire that we do not renew, we endeavour to re-deploy staff affected to another store within the Arcadia Group as much as we can."

It's been bad news for shops in north Kent in the last few months- Waitrose recently shut in Dartford but will be replaced by Aldi and Marks and Spencers will be closing in Gravesend in August this year.

A spokesman for Montagu Evans LLP, which represents the Orchard Shopping Centre, refused to comment on the closure of the stores.

She said: "Aldi will be opening a large store next year (in the former Waitrose unit) and we have very strong interest in the adjacent unit therefore it isn't all doom and gloom.

"The client has asked us not to make further comment."

The former Waitrose unit is being split into two units and it is believed the shopping centre owners are referring to the one that Aldi is not opening in.

Can you make an appointment before you come anywhere near Bromley please. Mondays in the AM would be nice as I'm normally out of the area then.

With a bit of luck they will be so enchanted by Bexleyheath they won't want to cross the A20.

Having given this some more thought oBLiVioN 70, they do say Swanley is so nice in the PM hours.
Just be sure to out of there before sundown though, I don't want you on my conscience.

It's the council not the people that are the problem agreed but I can see why that comment, though a bit extreme, would be made, the kids from temple hill seem to do whatever they want and what's with the recent plague of people putting loud sports exhausts or customising crap cars, rover metro all polished and sounding like an evo has to be one of the most pathetic so far.

Perhaps if the council accept we can't compete with Bluewater and work on making things better for local people rather than just adding take a ways and ignoring anti social issues?

It's not up to the council councillors to keep the area in a good manner it is the people that shold care enough not to let the area fall down. People are to quick to jump dow other people's throats when it is down to us all to be bothered to do something rather than ****.

I think it went downhill when M&S left the high street.! About 15 years ago I used to live and work in East Dartford and as long as you stayed clear of tree estate and temple hill, it was pretty good in Dartford for shopping, living, amenities etc.. I returned there last weekend and was shocked at how 'rough' it had become. You don't have to be scum to live there at all, its all of its population who are 'moved in' who give it a bad name. Shops closing is the way of the world these days unfortunately, come to Swanley, its not bad really.

Shame about the shopping centre. I haven't shopped there for many years on account of there being no decent shops to shop in.
Still no doubt the empy Burtons/Dorothy Perkins and Evans units will be replaced by the usual burger/chicken grill takeaways. Any day now.
By the way thanks for the chuckles above.
