An elderly couple were attacked and tied up at their home in Petts Wood before burglars ransacked the property.

Bromley police said an aggravated burglary took place at around 5am this morning (June 9) at a house in Chislehurst Road.

A male victim, 69, was repeatedly punched in the face as he opened his front door before he and his wife, 67, were tied up and further assaulted.

They are currently (midday) in a south London hospital suffering from a number of injuries and shock.

After the raid officers said the suspects fled by car with a quantity of cash and items of jewellery, while the female victim managed to free herself and call the police.

Both attackers are reportedly black males aged between 30-35 and are said to have been wearing dark clothing at the time.

The first is thought to be around 6ft 4ins, and the second is believed to be about 5ft 7ins, with a moustache.

DS Gary Head of Bromley police said: "This was a vicious attack on an elderly couple and I would appeal for anyone who may have seen these two males in the area at the time of the incident to contact us immediately."

Police and a forensics team were at the scene throughout the morning and a Community Support Officer was standing guard at the front door.

An elderly neighbour, who asked not to be named, said she was woken up by police at 6am asking if she had seen or heard anything.

The victims are thought to be a Turkish couple and are described by residents as "considerate".

Consultant Anna-Marie, 25, who lives in Poverest Road, came outside with others to find out what had gone on.

She said: "There was an ambulance here early this morning. Police have been here since then.

"I don't know what happened."

News Shopper has received unconfirmed reports that the getaway vehicle may have been a Toyota. A witness said the driver stared at him before speeding off down Chislehurst Road.
